This summer, the Swedish authorities have reduced the permitted weight for road transport in and out of Sweden to 40 tonnes. The former permitted total weight was 60 tonnes and the total vehicle length was 25.25 metres. The changes came as a surprise to the haulage industry and will have major consequences, leading to more vehicles on the roads, shortage of equipment, increased transport costs and a higher environmental burden.

The effect of a change in practice in Sweden is also increased costs and thus the need for cost recovery. This will mean a price increase. The size of the increase is under consideration.

Positive signals
The Swedish authorities have given signals that they are positive to amending the legislation to continue previous practice. While we are waiting for resolution of the problem, Norway Post and Bring will adapt their transport to the lower weight limit and the vehicle lengths.

The transport ministers of Norway and Denmark have interested themselves and have written letters to their Swedish colleague asking for a reintroduction of the former weight limit and vehicle lengths.
